FAQ's

Will my microphone fit?

The Melon Studio is designed to accommodate most side-address microphones with long/short-bodies within a diameter of 40mm to 63mm / 1.60” to 2.50”.

Does my Melon Studio purchase include a microphone, microphone stand, or shock-mount?

No, Melon Studio is a microphone accessory and does not include a microphone, microphone stand, or shock-mount.

Why do my recordings sound louder when I use my Melon Studio?

It is perceived that the Melon Studio makes recordings sound louder. Melon Studio channels sound directly into your microphone and the projection of your voice towards the microphone allows Melon Studio to capture the true tonality of your vocals, amplifying them. It may be necessary to adjust or turn down the input gain when using your Melon Studio If you are using a USB microphone, adjust the gain settings on your microphone, software, and interface.

How does Melon Studio affect my mixing and mastering?

Melon Studio lessens the need for excess equalization and post-production processing. It provides a clear tone, vastly reducing reflections and the ambient frequencies within a recording space. Melon Studio captures the complete spectrum of your voice and reduces much of the external environment, giving you clear and concise vocals, free of coloration.

The Melon Studio Series is designed to isolate your microphone from the external environment and capture the full vocal spectrum of your voice. All recording spaces vary, some spaces are more reflective and can create additional echoes. The Melon Studio Series can be quite effective in reducing these reflections and ambience, it just may take a little extra time to set up and test.

I tried my Melon Studio, and it doesn’t sound right. What do I do?

Follow these instructions to achieve optimal sound quality:

  • Make sure you are actively speaking/singing into the Melon Studio.
  • Ideally, your Melon Studio and microphone should be centered in the recording area or room. This allows for the reverberations to disperse through the air, limiting room reflections. Try setting up in different areas your recording space to see what sounds best.
  • It is perceived that the Melon Studio makes recordings sound louder. The projection of your voice towards the microphone allows Melon Studio to capture the true tonality of your vocals, amplifying them. It may be necessary to adjust or turn down the input gain when using your Melon Studio . If you are using a USB microphone, adjust the gain settings on your microphone, software, and interface.
  • If your recording space is less than ideal (concrete, windows, bare floors, and walls, etc.) minor tweaks and additions could help. Try adding a rug under your microphone stand, extra sound dampening objects or insulation around the recording space.
  • Adjusting the space between the vocalist and your Melon Studio will affect the sound. Experiment with different distances to determine what works best.

Remember, you can never eliminate all reverberations - even the best studios may have room reflections. The Melon Studio will not eliminate all unwanted reflections or natural reverberations but will vastly reduce the need to treat your recording space.

My microphone will not screw into its shock-mount. Why?

Short-bodied microphones like the TLM 103, when fitted in the Melon Studio, will not screw into its respective shock-mount. The Melon Studio will sit decoupled from the shock-mount and remain stable.
Shock-mounts with elastic grip systems commonly sold with Audio Technical microphones will fit differently with your Melon Studio.  Remove the elastic bands and center attachment within the shock-mount.  Your Melon Studio will then sit on the frame of the shock-mount decoupled.

How do I clean my Melon Studio?

Due to the porosity of the foam, the Melon Studio will naturally collect dust and debris. The best way to keep your Melon Studio clean is to gently use a sticky lint roller. If you've stained your Melon Studio with food or a hard-to-remove substance, use a bit of water and gently rub it out with a non-abrasive, lint-free cloth.

How do I pack and travel with my Melon Studio?

Your Melon Studio can be packed without its original packaging.  Be sure to remove the pop filter first before packing the foam ball away.  We recommend packing your pop filter separately in a soft casing. The foam ball will expand back to its original shape when removed from your luggage.
